Mindful Eating: Creating a Meal Plan

Oh what a loaded topic I have on the blog today! Food, meal plans, healthy lifestyle choices are loaded subjects for me. While I was not a large child, I would have never considered me skinny either – which is strange because looking back, I really was in a healthy weight range throughout high school and college. As an adult, after children, my weight has crept on. Issues like insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome complicate the weight issue even more. My plans for 2024 have been to make healthier eating choices to help with not only my weight but also the hormonal changes that come with middle age. This post will focus on mindful eating: creating a meal plan.

Focus on your main goal when creating a meal plan.

For me, my main focus is reducing the amount of sugar in my diet. When my sugar intake decreases, my overall health increases. I see multiple benefits of limiting sugar in my meal plans.

Focus on what your main goal is and create a meal plan that moves towards that goal. One of the easiest and most consistent changes I have made is switching out how I prepare my morning coffee. Instead of a sweet creamer which I would give a heavy pour into my coffee, I now add a scoop of collagen (protein and joint benefits), a touch of Stevia, and a little half&half.

In my meal planning, I try to do the same thing – look for little changes I can make that will reduce that sugar intake. I have incorporated more sweet potatoes into my diet as they are a healthier veggie than a basic baked potatoe. I’ve really cut back on the amount of bread served with our meals. Little changes can contribute to healthier long term lifestyle choices.

Know the basics when creating a meal plan.

It is helpful to understand the very basic food categories to help you create a nourishing meal plan. Foods have carbohydrates, proteins, and/or fats. Understanding that keeping carbohydrates paired with protiens and fats paired with protiens while keeping carbohydrates and fats separate has been a tremendous help to me. Trim Healthy Mama has been a big resource in guiding my mindful eating habits. With this knowledge, creating a meal plan is easier.

I love finding healthy recipes on Instagram that I can try.

The Galvaston Diet book has also been an asset for understanding this new season of life and I am in. It is amazing what power and medicine is in the foods we eat. In this book, I am learning the value of protein and fiber in my diet as well as the benefits of weight lifting for overall body health.

Create One Week at a Time Meal Plans

It is easier to be mindful when there is a determined number of days. Seven days of creating a meal plan is a doable amount for me. As I have shared before here, I function best when I eat every 3 hours; therefore, I have three meals a day and 2-3 snacks a day.

I’ve recently found an account on Instagram where the mom shares meals that she makes for her family. The ingredients are purchased from Aldi’s. Now, next to having a good plan, I love saving some money! Alison Havens is the mom’s name and here is one of her weekly meal posts. For whatever meals I plan, I can always tweak them to a healthier version if need be. Honestly though, my suppers are not my biggest health concern – my mindless snacking is. Another resource I have discovered that does provide healthy snack and meal options is The Peachy Spoon. A friend sent me this recommendation and I am grateful!

Incorporate your favorites into your meal plan.

I’m uncertain why I buy into the lie that I need different healthy foods each and every day. When I eat horribly, I go to the same foods over and over again. Why can’t I apply that to my healthy food choices. Love a great chicken salad? Fix it everyday if need be. Found just the right treat to satisfy your sweet tooth? Keep it on hand.

You can incorporate favorite meals and snacks again and again. Just about any type of roasted vegetables are amazing to me. No matter what the main course is, adding some roasted veggies are always a healthy choice for me.

So go ahead and create a meal plan following these tips: focus on your main goal, know your basics, plan only a week at a time, and incorporate your favorites! Please let me know how your meal planning goes.

How to Start a Blog: Tips to Make it Happen

In today’s fast paced culture, one would think a blog is antiquated. However, blogs are a thriving mode for communicating with a mass audience covering any topic of interest. Read along as I share how to start a blog: tips to make it happen.

    1. Select a niche.

I almost hate using this phrase for a subheading. If you spend any time at all online, you will hear the buzzword, “niche”. Honestly, sometimes it is stressful when I hear, “select a niche” or “niche down”. Take a deep breath and do not fear, selecting a niche might be easier than you think. What is it that you want to share? What perspective do you have that you want the world to know? For me, I like sharing about my home and family – our lifestyle. I have selected the niche of “Lifestyle Blogger”. When creating your own blog, select a niche ideal for you.

Much of my blog inspiration comes from what I share on my Instagram account.

    2. Utilize a host site.

It is almost comical that I have a blog when being tech savvy is not my forte. The good news is, there are YouTube tutorials that can walk you through a step-by-step process for setting up your blog. These tutorials do a great job of helping you understand the ways to begin to monetize your blog. I decided to use WordPress to create my blog. WordPress has a wide range of templates to use when designing your blog.

Over and over again as I started my blogging journey, I saw information about bluehost.com. This is my host site for my blog. It allows me to own the name of my blog and its place on the internet. I pay an annual fee for the website name and site upkeep.

    3. Determine a schedule.

Once you have hammered out the nitty gritty of a niche and have taken the time to set up and create the look of your blog, it is time to determine a schedule. Admittedly, this last one has been my weakness. For the 2024 year, one of my two goals for the year was to write 52 blog posts. I wanted to consistently show up on my blog in a way I had not previously done. Notice, I did not say I would post once a week – ha! I know myself too well and wanted to give myself grace in the event that something happened one week and I could not generate a blog post on a specific day of the week. Currently I am targeting releasing a new blog every week. A bulk of my blog posts have been released on Wednesdays with few exceptions. Determine a schedule that works for you and stick to it!

My hope is that these tips are just the motivation you need to start your own blog! Please let me know in the comments if you have a blog and what its name is. I would love to check it out!

    3 Levels of Date Night

Date night can be such an exciting time. It can also cause anxiety or stress in long term relationships. Date nights should not stop once one is in a committed relationship. In fact, as a married individual, I propose 3 levels of date night.

A while back I heard a man speak of advice he was given regarding date nights. He passed the information along and I took a shine to it and have incorporated his advice into mine and my husband’s date nights. His advice? Take your spouse on a date every other week; a weekend away every other month; and a week vacation every other year. Why is this important? Relationships, even seasonsed married ones, take time to grow and develop. To be in a marriage relationship, is to be a farmer tending the soil of your hearts. Read along as I give further explanation to the 3 levels of date night.

    1. Local Date Night

Local date nights mean just that – they are local. I found a great blog post that gives some creative ideas for date nights in my neck of the woods (Birmingham, AL).

Oftentimes, mine and Jeff’s local date nights simply include a dinner out to a new or an old, favorite restaurant. For this reason, I love the above referenced blog posts that provides a variety of local date night ideas. I am definitely going to be using some of these ideas!

    2. Weekend Date Night

The next level of date night is: every other month, spend a weekend away together. You can stay somewhere local or travel a little distance but the point is to get away from your daily distractions and spend time in special lodgings to enjoy one another. I recently found this beautiful weekender set on Amazon that would make packing for getaways so much fun! (As an Amazon Associate, I may earn commission on any viable links. This comes at no extra costs to you.)

A weekend away gives you a chance to not only enjoy one another’s company but to also rest and relax. Got a location or activity that you know your kids will not like? Save it for your weekend date nights. Honestly, on our last weekend getaway, Jeff and I did not do a whole lot of anything. We went to bed early and got some much needed rest. It was a good time together and our destination was only about a 3 and half hour drive from our house.

    3. Vacation Date Night

The final level of date night is the Vacation Date Night. Every other year, take a vacation with just your spouse. This may sound scary, especially if you have small children, but you can implement this date night as you see fit. Why is this level important? Because if your marriage is successful, it will be the longest relationship you have and your spouse will be the one person who is most often in your life. While you have your relationship with your children, they will grow up, move away, and start families of their own. You and your spouse can maintain your relationship by getting away together for a vacation. A week is an ideal time period; however, work out what you can. Give yourself some grace. If your children are too small or finances are tight, you can spread out your vacations to a few years apart.

In full disclosure, this last level has been rare for my husband and I; however, this past summer in celebration of our 20th anniversary, we went on a 10 day vacation and it was wonderful. We savored the time we had together. We were reminded of why we picked each other and why we fell in love.

    A word of advice…

Now, if while you have read this blog, you have thought, “How is this possible? Surely she doesn’t keep this kind of date night schedule?” OR, “That might work for her but my spouse doesn’t plan anything.” To answer both lines of thought: 1. We do not strictly adhere to the schedule of these levels of date night but we have implemented all three levels. 2. In our relationship, I am more of a planner. I could spend time bemoaning my husband’s lack of planning date nights or I could: communicate to him that date nights are important to me; appreciate that planning and organization are my strong skill sets; and take notice of the other contributions my husband makes to our relationship.

Each relationship is unique but incorporating these 3 levels of date night into ours has proven beneficial. Please let me know if you have tried these various levels.

3 Easy and Nutritous Breakfast Ideas

We all know breakfast is an important start to your day but sometimes knowing what to make leaves one stumped. Here are three easy and nutritous breakfast ideas to get your day going!

    Eggs and bacon

Eggs and bacon are about as easy as it gets. Why is this considered a nutritious breakfast? It includes fats and protein. Our bodies need fats, protiens, and carbohydrates in a healthy balance. Consuming fats and protiens together in a balanced amount allows your body to take in nutrients and maintain a safe blood glucose level while keeping your body satisfied for the three hour time block between meals. I like my eggs fried and for convenience, I cook my bacon in the oven.

I learned from Martha Stewart a few years ago how to cook bacon in the oven. Lining a baking sheet with aluminum foil, place your bacon on the baking sheet in a cold oven and set the oven to 425 degrees. After 25 minutes, your bacon is ready!

    THM Pancakes

Trim Healthy Mama pancakes are an amazingly wonderful, nutritous meal. As I have shared in a previous post, Trim Healthy Mama is a program that works to balance your blood glucose level in order to help with weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight.

Trim Healthy Mama has multiple offerings in print including an introductory book to their program as well as cookbooks with great recipes to incorporate into your meal plans. Here is the recipe for these energizing pancakes that are made with protein and carbohydrates as the main macronutrients. Combining these macronutrients creates a meal that provides energy for your day. For a sweetner, I use Stevia in my meals that call for a sugar substitute. Here is one type of stevia that can be ordered from Amazon. (As an Amazon Associate, I am eligible to earn commission on any viable link. This is at no cost to you.) Trim Healthy Mama also sells its own type of sweetner.

Sweet Potatoes with Avocado, Egg, and Cottage Cheese

Oh my goodness, I discovered this magnificent breakfast recipe by following Trim Healthy Mama on Instagram. This meal is considered a “crossover” meaning it has all three macronutrients involved. While a crossover meal will not help you lose weight, it can be a great idea for maintaining a healthy weight balance. For me, this meal is a choice that keeps me interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is delicous! You can see how easy it is to make in the video below.

Well there you have it! Three easy and nutritous breakfast ideas to get your day going in a healthy way. What are your go-to nutritous breakfast recipes? I would love to hear from you!

5 Daily Habits for Healthy Eating

Eating healthy may seem overwhelming or like an insurmountable tasks; however, establishing healthy eating habits creates positive outcomes in your life. With the implementation of 5 daily habits for healthy eating, you will see an improvement in your overall health.

    1. Take a multivitamin.

Multivitamins provide nutrients that your body might be lacking. For me, Vitamin D and C are two vitamins that I need more of in my body. When I take a daily multivitamin, my energy levels noticably improve. Of course, the addition of raw fruits and vegetables will also increase the nutrients available to your body. While the increase in energy levels is wonderful, I will caution against taking any vitamins on an empty stomach. Please eat a full meal before taking vitamins in order to reduce the possibility of nausea and always consult your doctor before taking any new vitamin or supplement.

    2. Drink water.

Sure this habit is a no brainer but if you are like me and not a huge fan of water, you might want to get creative in how to get your water intake higher. Setting a goal for how many ounces you will drink per day, using a pretty water bottle, or adding a no sugar sweetener to your water might be ways to make drinking water daily an easy habit. Since reducing sugar in my diet, I find that I am reaching more for water and allowing myself one Coke Zero per day.

There is a drink that Trim Healthy Mama created called “Good Girl Moonshine” and it has water, apple cider vinegar, ground ginger, and stevia in it. I’ve made it with a flavored tea to give it extra punch. This drink is a healthy sipper and also helps with weight loss – the apple cider vinegar can help to invigorate your metabolism.

    3. Plan ahead.

This habit is CRUCIAL to my success. Creating a meal plan the weekend before the next week helps me keep on track for healthy eating. Designating specific times to create meals and snacks saves me from becoming too hungry and eating anything in sight. With the proper preparation, I already know what my next meal or snack will be. I have sat down with my own schedule and written in meals and snacks; however, I believe you could use a calendar as well.

Part of my planning includes researching various healthy eating sites via Pinterest and Instagram for meal and snack inspiration. My favorite is when I can find a Trim Healthy Mama weekly meal plan and pull meal ideas from it. In 2022, I set a goal of providing 365 different meals for my family. This task definitely required planning ahead! You can read all about it here.

I recently discovered The Peachie Spoon on Instagram and love the variety of recipes she has that help stabilize blood sugar levels.

    4. Eat every 3 hours.

Trim Healthy Mama is the eating plan that I am most closely adhering to and one of its pillars of success is the habit of eating every 3 hours. This time frame allows your body to process the food from the previous meal without overloading its systems.

When I create my meal plan, I write out the times I will be having my meals and snacks. Typically I have a meal at: 6:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. My 6:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and my 6:00 p.m. times are for meals and the other times are for snacks. The key to success is pairing either fats with protein or carbohydrates with protein but NO MIXING fats, carbs, and protein. I highly recommend the Trim Healthy Mama book. The sisters that wrote the book spent years in research on ways to provide the best nutrition to your body.

As an Amazon Associate, I may be eligible to earn commission on viable links.

    5. Celebrate the wins.

Making healthier choices is hard. Celebrating each little win is a great habit to establish daily. Do you feel more energized? That’s a win. Did you lose half a pound? Consider that a win. Are you able to think more clearly? Another win. Celebrate your ability to grow and change for the better. This is a habit to incorporate in every aspect of life!

By implementing these 5 daily habits for healthy eating: take a multivitamin, drink water, plan ahead, eat every 3 hours, and celebrate the wins, you are sure to feel the positive results in your body!

    The First Day of School

The first day of school is cause for much anticipation in the Helms House. Preparation for a new school year takes a little bit of time to accomplish. With a few procedures in place, you can have a great start to the school year.

    List supply needs.

Depending on how many kids you have in your home, you may have multiple school supply lists. However many children you have, list out each school supply needed and start making purchases to mark off the list. Some school systems offer a pre-order of school supplies to be delivered directly to the school before the start of the year. With Instacart, Amazon, and Walmart +, you can order your school supplies to be delivered to your door. If you are like me, you can list out the items then determine which store has the cheapest selection.

Make a list of clothing items needed for the first day of school.

If your kids are like mine, clothing needs vary from year to year. Does your son need new jeans? Does your daughter need new shoes? Having a list of needed items allows you the opportunity to search for sale items in your area or online. I like consulting Brad’s Deals for some good finds.

Lay everything out the night before.

Once your school supplies are purchased, pack them all in backpacks and have the backpacks by the door. Go ahead and lay out what the first-day-of-school outfit will be. Take the time to pack lunches the night before. Doing as much as possible the night before will help the morning of school go more smoothly.

    Plan something special

Once you have completed all the prep work of outfits and supplies, plan something special for the morning of the first day of school. In our house, we go to a special breakfast place as a treat to spend time together before school begins. We have to leave our house extra early for this treat but my kids love it. Don’t forget to account for a crazy amount of traffic on the first day. Play calming music on the way to school (we play worship music), choose to not “fuss” or lecture the kids during this car ride. Time for correction and guidance can wait until after school. Spend time talking with your kids and praying together.

I share the above principles time and time again because they have added such value to my life. You can read more about where I learned my back-to-school procedures here?

    Breakfast at Hero Donuts.

What procedures did I leave out? When will your children return to school?

Tips for Planning Your Own Travel Itinerary

Summer is the perfect time for travel! With kids out of school, beautiful weather, and vacation days, travel sounds like a great idea. You can check out another favorite vacation spot of ours here. Feeling overwhelmed with the idea of planning your vacation? Here are some tips for planning your own travel itinerary.

    travel planning

    Conwy Castle

Tip 1: Pole your partner or family on desired location

Ask your partner or family members what locations they would like to visit. I’ve even heard of some family members creating PowerPoints with the highlights of their desired destination! Getting input from your traveling party allows you to consider what locales will best meet everyone’s ideals.

Tip 2: Utilize Pinterest and Google

Once you have a location, spend quite a bit of time researching the locale. Pinterest and Google are big supports in researching information regarding vacation destinations and amenities. My personal favorite is Pinterest. You can check out my Wales/Ireland board here.

I did use Google for Google Flights and booked my airline tickets through this site. Google Flights also required travel insurance purchase for the airfare. This is beneficial in case of an emergency that would require you to cancel your trip. We did not get travel insurance for the rest of our trip because it was not all-inclusive. Our car rental and hotel stays had their own cancellation policies that provided the necessary “insurance” to protect our interests in the event of a need to cancel. Whether or not to purchase travel insurance is a decision only you can make – you know your personal situation best.

Tip 3: Create a Google Doc

As you formulate a draft of what you would like to see and do on vacation, create a Google Doc for your Itinerary. This format will be easy to edit and add to as you gain more knowledge of your accommodations and activities. For our recent trip to Wales, I added all of my Google Map links to the itinerary to assist with traveling from one location to the next. I also included all of my accommodation confirmation numbers and ticket purchase verification numbers. Our flight numbers were also typed into this itinerary and was easily accessible via Google Docs.

    Newborough Beach, Wales

    Newborough Beach

Tip 4: Don’t plan too much

Vacation should be just that – a vacation. I planned three activities at most for each day of our vacation with the understanding that we might not get to everything. I wanted enough options to keep us entertained but wanted the ability to opt out if we were feeling tired or overwhelmed.

Another factor to consider in your planning is the physical abilities of all of your travel party. You may have some highly active, physically fit members of your party as well as some members that struggle with stairs. Consider everyone’s activity levels when making your travel experience plans. For example, Wales had a variety of activity levels from a “Ziplining World” to train rides to see the local scenery. We crafted an itinerary that met our physical abilities.

    Tip 5: Expect the unexpected

Know that no matter how much planning you do prior to your vacation, something can and will go wrong. Try to roll with the punches and appreciate each moment. For example, our vacation went beautifully until the last day. We had three legs of our flights. Our first leg of the flight from Dublin to London went as planned, the last two legs of the flight were delayed for 24 hours. We made it home and remembering all the fun we had on our vacation helped lesson the dissappointment of delayed flights.

Did I leave anything out? Do you have another tip in mind when creating your own travel itinerary?

    Creating a Summer Schedule

While it is still spring, I like to spend time creating a summer schedule. My kids are 22 (our oldest lives on his own), 17, 15, and 11. Summer schedules have been a lifesaver to me during the summer months. I will share some of my strategies for enjoying the most out of summer break!

    1. Add events to your calendar.

Looking at a three month calendar spread and adding all the events your family has in store for the summer will give you peace of mind. Having a visual calendar on display somewhere in your home is also a good idea. For my family, we place all of our events in our iPhone calendar so we can all access the event schedule.

    2. Plan ahead.

Before moving to a suburb of Birmingham, the most planning ahead I would have to do would be if there was a sports camp I needed to get on the books. However, moving to a larger city with a larger demographic of two income families, planning ahead for summer is imperative. In our area, some summer camp registrations open in the December before summer break. For example, for summer 2023, some camp registrations opened December 2022. That is quite the planning ahead!

    3. Make a list.

Make a list of how many children you have, what sports and activities each child is involved in, what camps and vacations you will be attending this summer. We love heading to the beach for summer vacation. 30A is one of your favorite destinations. You can read about what activities we enjoy at the beach here. Having everything listed out ensures you do not leave any events out when you go to plot them on your calendar.

    4. Don’t forget the freebies!

Free events are AMAZING! Reference your local newspaper or happenings page to see what local events are free. A local mom’s group or page is an excellent source of event information. Birmingham Mommy and Rocket City Mom are two amazing sites filled with local events for the Birmingham and Huntsville areas respectively. Two organizations that I have used for years to supply my kiddos with free activities is the church and library. Vacation Bible School and children’s library programs are both FREE! Many volunteers and educators give their time to create remarkable events for our children to enjoy over the summer.

    5. Create a weekly and daily schedule.

One of my biggest concerns over the summer months is keeping my kids off of their screens all day. To help with reducing screen time, I create a daily schedule for my kids. For example, each child gets a three ring binder at the beginning of the summer that is his/her Summer Binder. As a family, we decide what activities we enjoy best then create a weekly schedule. Our weekly schedule covers Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are left alone for weekend time. For example, we have: Make a Meal Monday, Theater Tuesday ($5 movies at AMC theaters), Wet Wednesday (pool day), Thinking Thursday (library day), and Family Friday (another pool day with family and friends – what can we say? We love the pool!) Here is a great example of a summer schedule that I was able to 1 find on Pinterest and utilized to help me craft my own.

Our daily schedule may look like: No more than three hours of screen time, complete responsibilities, play musical instrument, walk the dog, play outside for 30 minutes, read a book, do devotions. Giving a list of possible activities that can be done greatly reduces the “I’m bored!” comments. Factor in our weekly activities and we have a great summer!

Whatever your crew likes to do, my hope is that my tips for creating a summer schedule will benefit you!

Tips for Successful College Campus Tours

    Brainstorm Colleges of Choice

I’ve been cautioned for years that this season of life approaches and passes quickly. Oh how true that is! The season of planning for college is upon us. From my experience, I want to share some tips for successful college campus tours.

Tip #1 is to sit down with your high school junior and discuss: career interests, college location interests, and financial obligations for college. Having these discussions early during junior year is ideal. Have your junior create a list of possible colleges he/she would like to visit.

As you can tell here, I love to travel! And visiting colleges offers multiple opportunities to see new places.

    Auburn University’s Football Stadium

    Set Up College Campus Tours

Returning to work outside of the home this year, I really felt behind on setting up college visits for my son. However, we picked an evening with no distractions and sat down with our computer and calendar to schedule college campus visits.

I learned during this process that some colleges only have Monday visits available. In my mind, I thought all college visits would take place on the weekend. That is not always the case. For example, the University of South Alabama held their college Pre-Med tour day on a Monday and since my son is interested in the medical field, we needed to schedule our visit for this particular day.

Out of the four schools we visited (University of South Alabama, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Auburn University and Mississippi State University), two tours were held on Mondays and the other two were held on weekends.

    Include All Relevant Tours

Typically at each school, there will be a variety of tours offered. The standard tour is the campus tour; however, some colleges request their housing tours be booked separately as well as their recreational center tours. Take the time to look at all the tours available and schedule any tour that might be of interest to your student.

We booked campus, housing, and recreational center tours. In some cases, we scheduled meetings with the department chairs of the College of Math and Science. Scheduling meetings with specific department chairs allows you to ask detailed questions about the major your student is interested in pursuing.

A part of our campus tour at Mississippi State University.

    Take in the Extras

If the college your student chooses is their home for the next four, six, or longer years, then take in the extras. What do I mean by that? If the college/university is a distance away from your home, book a hotel and stay a night or two. Allowing your student to experience the surrounding town of the college/university will afford him/her the opportunity to get a feel for what life will be like while they are in school.

We love asking the locals where to eat. I enjoy seeing what famous spots the towns are known for. For example, if visiting Auburn University, then Toomer’s Drugstore is a must stop for their world famous lemonade. The picture below is of the cute area of downtown Starkville, Mississippi where Mississippi State University resides.

The beautiful downtown area of Starkville, Missississippi – home of Mississippi State University.

Hopefully these tips will help guide you as you tackle this developmental milestone. May you have many successful college campus tours!

How to Raise Kids to be a Part of a Whole

While kids are a wonderful addition to the family, effort must be given to raise kids to become successful adults. Successful adults that are capable of functioning well as a member of society. Reaching way back to when mine were little, I’m sharing how to raise kids to be a part of a whole.

An Instagram follower asked me to share how I am able to get my children involved in helping around the house. This request prompted contemplation as to what strategies I incorporated in having my kids participate in household chores and household life in general.

    Help Clean Up

Cleaning up after one’s self is a lifelong skill. There is no harm in talking with your little ones from day one about picking up after you are finished with whatever item/items you are using. The added bonus is talking through your activity. Talking while moving through your actions builds language for your children. As children age, sing “Clean Up, Clean Up” (from the Barney show) or any other similar song to encourage your children to clean. As you clean up, have your children put away items with you as well. You are the model for appropriate action.

    Create Responsibility Charts

Pinterest offers a variety of ideas on when and how to start utilizing chore charts. I like to call them responsibilities. An age-appropriate chore chart gives kids visual cues on how to help out around the house. I have a variety of pins on my Kids Crafts board, you can check out some chore ideas here.

My husband and I even give some money for each chore completed. The amount is not a lot but enough to put a little spending money in our kids’ pockets. From this money, we have taught the 10/10/80 approach. 10% to God, 10% to savings, and 80% to spend as you choose.

This an example of age-appropriate chores.

    Teach the Belief of Family

In addition to using chores and allowance as a motivator for our kids to participate in helping with the household, my husband and I have been very intentional about the belief of family. What do I mean by this? From an early age, we share and discuss with our children the importance of taking care of our family. Thus, each member of our family has an important role to help the whole unit. Some tasks and responsibilities are not compensated. They are performed simply for the good of the family. As parents, we determine what tasks and responsibilities need to be completed for the well being of the entire household. It is important for kids to learn that not every responsibility is going to receive a paycheck and it is important to follow the guidelines that mom and dad have established.

There are some great resources available for assisting with raising your children. I encourage you to find an older woman in your church that you admire or feel like she has a good handle on her family life. Follow her example, become a part of her Life Group, or ask for her guidance. Here is another great resource I like – Raising Girls and Boys.

    Disclaimer

By sharing what my family has done to have our children become involved in the household responsibilities, this does not mean we have it all together. My biggest area of weakness is consistency. Being consistent with requiring my children to follow through with their responsibilities is always going to be a struggle for me.

While not perfect, I am willing to share all that is going on in The Helms House here. I hope you will follow along and interact with me by letting me know what you like or have questions about. Raising kids to be successful adults is challenging, rewarding work.
